Course Outline
-
Herbal Medicine is the peoples’ medicine. Plants are our elders and they are generous healers and teachers. We’ll explore how plants help us deepen our connection to the Earth and attune to the cycles of the moon.
We’ll have a Full Moon Ritual with Artemisia vulgaris. We suggest you do this ritual on or near a Full Moon. Artemisia offers to un-tame us, and helps us remember our night dreams, as well as the dreams of our hearts.
Robin Rose shares artemisia ritual recipes for tea, for hand, foot, and body baths, and several recipes for smoke mixtures featuring this amazing plant.
-
This Module focuses on how to nourish and support the ground of your being – your overall immunity – in order to be as well as possible. You will learn how to support yourself through illness with recipes such as Robin’s “personal sustainability blend” of red clover (Trifolium spp.), nettles (Urtica spp.), and oat straw (Avena sativa).
Build healthy digestion and immunity with vegetable and/or bone soups containing garlic and onions, roots such as burdock (Arctium spp.), ginger (Zingiber o.), Astragalus spp., dried and fresh mushrooms such as Chagas (Inonotus obliquus) and shiitakes (Lentinula edodes), and a variety of seaweeds.
-
Humans have always participated in rituals. We’ll explore why it is healing to restore authentic ritual practices at this time. We will delve into the creative aspects of crafting potent, meaningful rituals, on your own or in community. We’ll engage with the elements to create sacred space, explore symbols and metaphors, craft altars, and discuss divination and timing for spontaneous, daily, solar, and lunar rituals and ceremonies.
We will be exploring/experiencing a number of magical herbs: mugwort/cronewort (Artemisia vulgaris and other artemisias), Grandmother cedar (Thuja occidentale), Rue (Ruta graveolens), Agrimony (Agrimonia spp.), and Marigold (Calendula officinalis), among others.
-
We’ll explore heart-healing foods including red and blue berries, along with herbs such as hawthorn (Cratageus spp.) and rosemary (Rosmarinus spp.) that help maintain and restore the health of the heart itself. We will discuss herbs that tone veins, strengthen arteries, and reduce plaque. Herbs such as parsley (Petroselinum crispum) and nettle (Urtica dioica) support the kidneys, which are key to maintaining healthy blood pressure.
We are in the midst of an evolutionary shift, a time of death and rebirth, moving from the age of separation into the age of unity. Our dear hearts need nourishment. Heart disease runs rampant, as does despair and numbness. We’ll look at how herbs help us express our grief, nourish our joy , and heal our hearts. Joy is medicine.
-
The acid mantle of your skin is a vital part of your innate immune system, and this beautiful covering can help you get clearer about where you end and others begin! Herbs excel at providing medicine for this amazing covering that is nearly waterproof and acutely sensitive to pleasure, pain, and temperature changes.
We’ll explore a range of approaches to skin healing - herbal scrubs with oatmeal (Avena spp.) and steams with elder blossoms (Sambucus spp.) to clear skin, and drinking herbal infusions of rose (Rosa spp.) or plantain (Plantago spp.) to heal our skin from the inside out. Anti-fungal and anti-viral herbs like basil (Occimum spp.) and marigold (Calendula off.) are helpful for skin infections like ringworm; chickweed (Stellaria spp.) is cooling and soothing applied to rashes.
-
In spring the energy of the Earth is rising, and herbs can help us rise to meet and greet the lengthening days. We’ll share a Spring Equinox ritual and invite ourselves to play! Movement, food rich in nutrients, time outdoors, herbal infusions, and flowers in our food help awaken our vitality.
When plants are popping up out of the ground, they’re ready to generously share an abundance of vitamins and minerals. Learn about herbs that will stir your vital life force when eaten as wild food or prepared as herbal infusions, including: nettles (Urtica dioica), red clover (Trifolium pratense), dandelions roots, leaves and flowers (Taraxacum spp.), violet leaves and flowers (Viola spp.), garlic mustard (Alaria petiolata), and plantain (Plantago spp.).
-
There is no diet that is right for everyone. We’ll look at the benefits of a rainbow diet, because including every color of food on your plate is a great way to get all the nutrients you need! The digestive system is the primary physical portal that connects our insides to the outside world. We’ll explore the in’s and out’s of this system, from ingestion to elimination; how we take in nourishment, make use of the nutrients, and support our bodies in releasing whatever can’t be assimilated.
How to work with herbs that help the liver and gallbladder, such as dandelion (Taraxacum off.) and burdock (Arctium lappa) will be discussed, along with soothing herbs such as marshmallow root (Althaea sp.) chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), and slippery elm bark (Ulmus rubra). We’ll celebrate the benefits of common foods such as apples as well as herbs you probably already have in your spice rack like cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum), and fennel (Foeniculum vulgare).
-
Strengthen your immune system and heal infections with the help of herbal medicine! We’ll discuss the differences between innate and acquired immunity as we dive into the watery brilliance of our lymphatic circulatory system.
We’ll explore a range of herbs – from the powerful benefits all species of basil (Occimum spp.) provide, to the immune-enhancing qualities of garlic (Allium sativum) to the stimulating properties of echinacea (Echinacea spp.). Learn how to incorporate immune-modulating herbs such as astragalus (Astragalus spp.) into soups and infusions to safely support people with auto-immune conditions.
Robin will also share a variety of ways to use lung strengthening herbs such as white pine (Pinus spp.) and mullein (Verbascum spp.).
-
The nervous system holds the key to your overall health. Tending to your nervous system with herbs increases your resilience, and caring for yourself with loving-kindness is not only a radical act, it strengthens your nervous system. Neurons live everywhere in our bodies and affect all of our systems: cardiovascular, immune, digestive, respiratory, urinary, musculoskeletal, and sexual/reproductive.
Learn natural ways to support these systems by soothing your nerves and easing stress with infused herbal oils and vinegars, tinctures and infusions. Full-body baths, as well as foot, and even hand baths can be immensely helpful. Herbs such as oat straw (Avena sativa), lavender (Lavendula spp.), basil (Ocimum basilicum), St John’s wort (Hypericum spp.), help address anxiety, pain, nerve damage, inflammation, headaches, insomnia, lethargy, and more.
-
This evening we’ll continue our discussion of herbal nervines and ritual practices that support and heal our nervous systems.
We’ll explore the abundance of herbal allies that are available to help us heal from shocks to the system. They can support us through personal betrayal, despair, heartache, and collective tragedies. We’ll look with gratitude to the gifts of roses (Rosa spp.), California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), motherwort (Leonurus c.), skullcap (Scutellaria spp.), lemon verbena (Aloysia citrodora), violet (Viola spp.), and linden (Tilia spp.).
-
We’ll explore what to do when things go wrong; when someone falls, cuts themselves, swells up after a bug bite, hyperventilates, freaks out, and more. Which herbs are indispensable? What do you want in your first aid kit at home or while traveling? What’s growing in your backyard that might prevent an infection from a splinter, a wasp sting, or from stepping on a piece of glass?
Herbs such as yarrow (Achillea milfoil), St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum), echinacea (Echinacea spp.), plantain (Plantago spp.), and marigolds (Calendula officinalis) are multi-talented healers. We will delve into different ways to use these and other herbs internally and topically to help prevent further complications from accidents and to achieve amazing healing results.
-
Under the full moon we sing, dance, drink herbal infusion, create sacred space with herbal smoke, and reconnect to ourselves and the Earth. We honor the journey you’ve undertaken, exploring the Green Witch’s Apothecary and conclude with a full moon meditation/ritual.
Robin answers students’ questions and leads a full moon meditation for you to reflect on where you’ve come from, where you are presently, and where you wish to go next, aided by the illuminating light of the beautiful full moon.
