Plants are generous healers and many important medicinal plants live where the most people are, so NYC is rich in a diversity of wild, nourishing medicines. We are likely to see and discuss healing plants such as plantain, dandelion, violet, goldenrod, yellow dock, and red raspberry, along with medicinal trees such as white pine, linden and hawthorn, and there are always surprises to delight us when we go out “weed walking”. Robin Rose has been plant walking in Central Park for nearly 30 years. She will share the physical and spiritual gifts of some of these and other plants, identification tips, best times for harvesting, and suggestions on whether to use specific plants as tinctures, oils, infusions, and/or food.

This walk will focus on how to approach these green healers with respect, gratitude, and an open heart as you invite the plants to share their teachings with you. The abundance of nature’s medicines in the heart of NYC will open your eyes and deepen and change your experience of living in the city.

Please note: This class will meet in Central Park, Manhattan. The meeting place will be given at registration.

Also note: This class will be held even with the possibility of light showers. However if there is inclement weather that prevents a walk, it will be canceled, registrants will be notified by email and either refunded or given credit for a future class.

The heart pumps vital nourishment throughout our bodies from the moment we’re born till our last breath. It is our physical and emotional core, where our greatest joys and cruelest pains are centered, but we tend to ignore it and not give it the attention it deserves.

In this class with renowned herbalist Robin Rose Bennett, we will honor our hearts by, first, exploring how our extraordinary cardiovascular system is designed to work, and then by exploring the remarkable plants nature provides to heal our hearts.

We’ll learn about some of the most important herbs that support the cardiovascular network and those that help with heartbreak, heartache, shock and grief, and learn how to use them effectively. These include lavender, rose, hawthorn, motherwort, linden and violet. Our afternoon together will include herb-tasting, meditation, hands-on medicine making, and other practices to help us open and heal our hearts.

When properly prepared, some of our favorite “seasonings” are actually profound herbal medicines.

Join herbalist Robin Rose Bennett as we go beyond the delight of aromatic and spicy flavors into the exciting and beneficial world of herbal medicine, discovering, for example, that basil is an effective anti-depressant, ginger can relieve lower back pain when used as a bath, and rosemary tea improves memory. We’ll explore hot, spicy herbs such as ginger, cayenne, garlic, black pepper, mustard and horseradish; and we’ll take a tour of aromatic herbs such as sage, rosemary, marjoram, basil, lavender and thyme. We’ll also touch on the medicinal properties of seeds such as sunflower, sesame and pumpkin, and the health benefits of foods such as honey, vinegar and chocolate.

Herbal preparations will be demonstrated to help you understand why one herb is powdered while another is used whole, why one is steeped and another is boiled. Herbs are truly “the people’s medicine” and this course is likely to bring out the herbalist in you.

Note: There will be a $2 materials fee payable to the instructor at the first session.
